England and Wales Pitted Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
