Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
