This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others alternatively covering one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
