This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
