The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
